Dear Colleagues,

As the new Vice President for Program, I am delighted to issue the Call for Papers for the 56th Annual Conference of the Association for Jewish Studies.

This year’s conference will take place Sunday, December 15 through Thursday, December 19. The conference will launch on Sunday with in-person gatherings worldwide, followed by four days of online academic sessions, Monday through Thursday.

This year’s unique conference structure will make the meeting accessible to those who may not be able to otherwise attend, reduce the burden of steep travel costs, and reduce our carbon footprint, while also offering opportunities to gather in person with colleagues.

Today, I hope you’re planning to submit your proposal to share your work with Jewish Studies colleagues from around the globe. The sessions you propose are the heart of the conference, and we appreciate each of our members' investment in making the annual conference such a stimulating and energizing gathering. Over twenty different divisions reflect the diversity of our scholarship, and we’re excited to welcome Digital Humanities as this year’s Wildcard Division.

New this year!

  1. •     Give your presentation in your preferred language: At the time of submission, presenters/organizers will be able to note whether they will present in English, Hebrew, Spanish, French, or German.
  2. •     Select your preferred time slot: The conference will be scheduled in EST. Submitters will be able to select their preferred time blocks in which to present, to account for availability across time zones.

This Call for Papers contains detailed information about types of sessions, the submission process, and subject area divisions. See the guide to start your submission process. Please reach out to Division Chairs or check out the Form for Organizing Session Submissions if you need help identifying colleagues with whom you could collaborate to develop a proposal. In order to achieve cohesive sessions and robust scholarly exchange in a virtual format, preference may be given to roundtable, lightning round, seminar, or scholarship/performance submissions.

The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday, May 3 at 5:00 PM EDT.

All submitters must be current AJS Individual Members for 2024.
